公開講演会「How to Be Human: Autism, Neurodiversity, and Communication Across Cultures」

Author of How to Be Human, Jory Fleming will visit Japan for the first time this October. Fleming, who is autistic and has several other disabilities, graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2017 with degrees in geography and marine science before completing graduate studies in Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. In this public lecture, Fleming and Hayato Uesugi (Yasushi Kaneko), translator of the Japanese edition, will discuss autism, neurodiversity, translation, and communication across cultural and linguistic boundaries. The lecture will provide students and members of the public with an opportunity to explore how English can serve as a bridge for meaningful communication among people with diverse communication styles and neurodiverse backgrounds.

Jory Fleming 氏
Jory Fleming was born in 1994. He is an autistic scholar and author who also has several other disabilities. He entered the University of South Carolina in 2013 and graduated in 2017 with degrees in geography and marine science. He then studied Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, completing his graduate studies in September 2019.
Since his student years, Fleming has devoted himself to educational volunteer work and has actively sought to promote greater public understanding of disabilities. As a researcher in geography and marine science, he is also committed to environmental conservation and creating a better future for the next generation.
Since 2020, he has served as a researcher at the University of South Carolina, and works for local government on environmental research and outreach activities.
His interests include birdwatching, board games, Scottish country dancing, and studying Japanese.
His first book, How to Be Human, was first published in the United States in 2021 and has since been published in Japanese as "Futsū" tte nan na no ka: Jiheishō no boku ga annai suru kono sekai (Bungeishunju).

Hayato Uesugi (Yasushi Kaneko) is a Japanese translator (English-Japanese and Japanese-English), editor, interpreter, and lecturer in English and translation. He also serves as a part-time lecturer at Rikkyo University.
He has translated more than 110 books, ranging from literary classics such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to books on Star Wars, Marvel, Disney, nonfiction, artificial intelligence, business, the humanities, and visual arts.
Alongside his translation work, he has been actively involved in supporting autistic people and their families, while also promoting greater public understanding of neurodiversity.
His translations related to autism and neurodiversity include Jory Fleming's How to Be Human (published in Japanese by Bungeishunju) and Victoria Lloyd-Barlow's All the Little Bird-Hearts (published in Japanese by Asahi Shimbun Publications).
