This lecture introduces Dr. Nikolas Broy’s recently published book that examines the history and religious practices of the Zhaijiao (“vegetarian sects”) from Ming-era southeastern China to contemporary Taiwan. Moving beyond labels such as “lay Buddhists” or “secret societies,” this book argues that these groups represent a unique intersection of Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist elements deeply rooted in mainstream religious culture. Through historical analysis and ethnography, this research reveals the Zhaijiao as central social institutions rather than merely religious ones. They manage property, mobilize resources, and engage in political life, proving that these sects are deeply embedded in the economic and cultural fabric of local society. The talk thus highlights the usefulness of an integrative approach, which is also central to a liberal arts education.
