スイス（IMD）の「世界競争力ランキング」で、2022年と23年に連続１位となったデンマークは、ワークライフバランスや労働エンゲージメント（社員の労働意欲）にも優れ、国連がまとめる「世界幸福度ランキング」でも例年トップランクに輝いている。これを支えるデンマークのグローバル企業の多くが、「産業財団」という非営利財団によって所有経営されている。わが国では、短期的な利潤の最大化を求める株主の要求に応えられるスピーディーな経営を行わなければ、グローバル競争に生き残っていけないという、アングロサクソン型の「株主ガバナンス」の考えが広がり始めている。それに対し、産業財団ガバナンスは、事業の永続と社会貢献を目的として掲げ、長期的な経営や安定的な雇用、慈善活動への寄付などを実践する。そのなかで優れた業績を持続的に実現し、同国の競争力の高さに貢献しているのである。北欧の企業ガバナンスの研究で世界的に知られるスティーン・トムセン教授を基調講演者に、デンマーク王国大使のヤール・フリース=マスン氏をパネリストに招き、産業財団ガバナンスや、そのような企業経営をめぐるデンマーク社会の考え方について紹介いただき、参加者との議論を行う。そこから日本社会や企業経営への示唆を導きたい。

The IMD World Competitiveness Index ranked Denmark as No. 1 for two consecutive years, in 2022 and 2023. The United Nations World Happiness Report consistently ranks Denmark as one of the "happiest" countries in terms of caring, sharing, supporting, and trusting one another. Denmark also ranks high in many other indexes, including work-life balance and employee engagement. There is no denying that globally competitive Danish firms are contributing to them. What is less well known is that many of these firms are owned and managed by a non-profit foundation called the Enterprise Foundation.
In Japan, the Anglo-Saxon concept of "shareholder governance" is gaining influence. It argues that companies may not survive unless they manage their businesses to respond to the demands of shareholders who want to seek short-term profit maximization. The Danish foundation governance, on the other hand, aims to ensure the continuity of business and contribute to society not only through charitable efforts but also by offering stable employment and addressing social challenges, such as environmental issues. In this way, they have achieved sustained growth and contributed to the country's competitiveness.
The symposium invites three distinguished speakers: H.E. Jarl Frijs-Madsen, the Danish Ambassador to Japan; Prof. Steen Thomsen of Copenhagen Business School; and Ms. Neil Strobeke, Vice Chair of the Ramboll Foundation. They will share their insights into the topic, followed by a Q&A and discussion with the floor, to draw implications for Japanese society and corporate management.
