The lecture will explore the interface between literature, translation, and diplomacy. I will focus on the particular traits of diplomacy as a highly intellectual profession, requiring extremely well developed linguistic, writing, and communication skills. After delineating diplomacy’s characteristics and challenges, I will proceed by talking about translation - firstly as a practice that has traditionally accompanied diplomacy from the beginning of times, and then as a relatively new discipline, the history of which draws, at times, heavily from interpretation and translational practices within a diplomatic context. Lastly, I will talk about literature as the vehicle of predilection of diplomats, many of whom have reached worldwide acclaim, not the least as Nobel Laureates. The last claim will be exemplified by means of an enumeration of some prominent authordiplomats, with a special focus on George Seferis, a Greek diplomat and Literature Nobel Laureate (1963).
