-Excerpts from Preface-

The symposium on Agrarian Transformation and Areal Differentiation in Globalizing Southeast Asia was conceived from an on-going Research Project (Project No. 12308003) with same title. Launched and organized by Rikkyo University under the auspices of Ministry of Education and Science for three years, the project began in 2000 and will end in 2003. The project involved eight Japanese and four foreign area specialists specializing on particular Southeast Asian countries. Among these specialists are three faculties from RU-CAAS. When Japanese members first conducted their workshop at Tokyo in December 2000, many expressed interest in organizing international workshop or symposium in order to bring together the field experiences of Japanese scholars and area specialists from Southeast Asian countries and discuss the similar or varied findings and insights on the project theme. It was felt that through these efforts and discussion, a better understanding of the changing pattern and the nature of agrarian transformation in this part of the world can be gained. For this reason, an international symposium was organized with the same theme as the project, and nine foreign area specialists from five countries, viz. Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and United Kingdom were invited together with 20 Japanese specialists.
