6月5日午前10時。上野公園の西郷像前に一見して多国籍とわかる一団が集合しました。彼らはM．カプリオ先生によるModern Japanese Historyの受講生たち。この日は授業の一環として上野～乃木坂～原宿と、歴史を訪ねてまわるのです。

Modern Japanese Historyは主に留学生を対象とした科目です。もちろん日本人学生も受講できますが、講義はすべて英語で行われます。この授業の最大の特徴は、カプリオ先生自身のガイドによる東京史跡探訪ツアーが隔週で行われることでしょう。我が国の近代史において重要な役割を担ってきた首都・東京。歴史の記憶が、ときにかすかに、ときに克明に刻みこまれているこの街は、そこで歴史を学ぶ者にとって格好の資料集となってくれるのです。

講義中はしばしば先生が投げかける問いによって受講生たちの発言が活発になります。一方、ツアー中は、みんな自由でマイペースといった様子で三々五々、雑談を楽しみながら移動することが多いです。それでも、折にふれて先生の解説には耳を傾けているようです。

ともに学習してきて感じたことですが、留学生の皆さんは歴史をよく知っています。日本史の具体的な知識であれば、それは私たち日本人学生のほうが豊富にもっていますが、留学生からは、歴史の「こうすればこうなる」といった部分に通じているような印象を受けるのです。

恐らく彼らは母国の歴史を学習する過程で、歴史一般の「傾向」のようなものを学んできたのでしょう。その枠組みに、日本史に個別な事情をあてはめてゆけば理解も早まることでしょう。

実はツアーを行う意義はここにこそあるように思えます。日本の近代史を、歴史の「傾向」や「法則」や自国史との比較のみでとらえてゆくのは、能率がよい反面、そっけない歴史にまとめてしまう恐れがある。ある地域史（ここでは日本史）の固有性を堪能したいのであれば、唯一の事件の唯一の舞台に出向いてなんとなく思いをはせてみる、くらいのディティールづくりは欠かせないと思うのです。東京は、それができる街ですし。

ツアーはもちろん、前後の講義内容に沿って計画されます。ではここで問題です。上野公園。乃木坂。原宿。今回のツアーでまわったこれらの土地から、どんな歴史が描かれるのでしょうか？

ヒントは現地にたくさんあります。

Modern Japanese History is a course about, as the name says, modern Japanese history, but other than most history classes, this class goes out into the wild world of Tokyo to see its history come alive. I’m really glad to have chosen to take this course, since the tours enable me not only to see parts of Tokyo I normally wouldn’t because I didn’t know about them, but also because with Caprio-sensei’s lectures before the tour and explanation during the tour, the history really comes alive to a certain extent.

下町風俗博物館

One of the highlights of today for me was the shitamachi museum, where we experienced how people in the Taisho period (1912-1926) lived their daily lives, and since all the objects on display were donated by people, meaning all object were actually used, it felt very real indeed.
Another highlight was General Nogi Maresuke's house and shrine. Walking through the gardens and seeing the house where he actually lived was very impressive, as well as the shrine, but unfortunately we could only enter the museum there because there were two weddings going on. The sword with which General Nogi committed suicide is on display in the museum, and like in the shitamachi museum, this really helps to deepen your interest in history.
The same can be said for General Togo Shinto shrine, his life was depicted throughout the shrine, which made me appreciate his history all the more.
